2005 NAPA OUTSTANDING BROCHURE AWARDS
Although they are an excellent marketing tool, Web sites have not eliminated
the need for printed customer information. The winner and finalists in
NAPA’s 2005 Brochure Award competition understand the importance of keeping
current and prospective customers informed. They’ve crafted some visually
appealing, effective printed pieces that promote their companies’ products
and services in particular and the HMA industry in general.
FINALIST'S
Heartland Asphalt Inc.
Mason City, Iowa

Heartland Asphalt Inc. is a finalist in the Brochure Award competition. Its
entry is a monthly series of single-sheet, 8 ˝ x 11-inch mailers designed
for an audience that includes state, county and city engineers, architects,
general contractors, and other potential customers.
2005 NAPA QUALITY IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS
The Quality in Construction
Awards recognize hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements of excellence. “NAPA
selects the award recipients using a known set of standards that have been
shown to give good results,” commented Richard F. Moore, Jr., Chairman of
the NAPA Board of Directors. “This award demonstrates the high-quality of
work that the HMA industry is achieving.”
Heartland Asphalt Inc. of Mason City, Iowa
Heartland Asphalt Inc. won Quality
in Construction awards
for the following projects:

• Work on 240th Street south of Mason City. The company paved and widened
the existing gravel road, first stabilizing the roadbed with rock to provide
a stable sub-base. The company used HMA mixes with special binders so that
the road could handle a large volume of truck traffic. Heartland kept in
constant communication with property owners, the ethanol plant and the
railroad to ensure that the project ran as smoothly as possible.

• Rehabilitation of Runway 17-35 at Mason City Municipal Airport. Working
on a very tight time schedule, Heartland Asphalt Inc. completely
reconstructed the southern 700 feet of the main runway where it intersected
with another, then milled and overlaid the remainder of the main runway.
The company met the Federal Aviation Administration ‘s demanding
specifications and produced a smooth runway that drew favorable comments
from pilots, passengers and airport managers.

• Work on County Road B-20 in Cerro Gordo County. The road, a major route
between the Interstate and several manufacturing and industrial facilities,
required widening and the installation of turn lanes at major
intersections. The company milled and reconstructed the badly deteriorated
concrete pavement and overlaid it with 8 inches of HMA placed in four
lifts. The public has commented favorably on the smoothness of the new
road.

Building on the success of the Quality Management Asphalt Program, this award recognizes the great degree of work that goes into building a quality pavement on the primary and interstate system. Smoothness, quality control, density results, and physical appearance all go into the overall ratings for the projects submitted in these categories. The winning pavements are considered the best-of-the-best, indicating that they are not only smooth but exhibit characteristics that produce long-lasting hot mix asphalt pavements.
