Heartland Asphalt, Inc.  was established in 1991 by George Jessen and the Fred Carlson Company of Decorah, IA.  George was Heartland’s First President and still serves in that capacity today.

The company roots began with an asphalt plant and business in Mason City established by Benderoff Construction in the mid 1960’s and an asphalt plant and business in Iowa Falls, IA established by Weaver Construction Company in the late 1960’s.   Eventually Weaver Construction acquired Benderoff and in 1986 Martin Marietta Aggregates purchased Weaver Construction’s crushed stone, sand/gravel and the asphalt business.  In late 1989 Martin Marietta elected to sell the asphalt portion of the business of which George Jessen was manager.

In January of 1990, George left Martin Marietta and started with Fred Carlson Company and opened a branch office in Mason City.  Carlson’s proceeded to purchase all the assets of the asphalt business from Martin Marietta.  Finally, in 1991 these assets were transferred to a newly created corporation called Heartland Asphalt, Inc..   In 1992, Heartland Asphalt purchased its present day office and shop and began to bid work as a subsidiary of the Fred Carlson Company.  At this time Heartland expanded into the Waverly area.

In 1997 George Jessen and the Heartland Asphalt management group purchased the remaining stock owned by Fred Carlson Company and its management team.  Heartland was now an independent asphalt construction company and producer.  Today, Heartland Asphalt operates plants in Mason City, Iowa Falls and Waverly, as well as a portable asphalt plant.  Heartland also operates sand, gravel and crushed stone locations in the Mason City and Clear Lake area.  In addition, Heartland has been very aggressive in the recycling of asphalt, using over 35, 000 tons of RAP (recycled asphalt product) annually which conserves our natural resources and saves money.
