Mason City, IA—January 5, 2004 -- Heartland Asphalt, Inc. of Mason City was presented with the top award for the “Quality Management Awards for Primary Resurfacing Category”at the 49^th annual Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa Convention December 2^nd at the West Des Moines Marriott. The APAI awards its contractor members with awards in many areas, including smoothness and quality management.

The Old U.S. Highway 218 Project North of Nashua in Chickasaw County has been recognized by the APAI in the area of Quality Management as the “Best-of-the-Best” by its contractor peers and the Iowa Department of Transportation. The resurfacing project, constructed in the summer of 2004, resulted in one of the smoothest primary routes in Iowa. Along with smoothness, the road exhibits other characteristics such as proper density, excellent quality control, and physical appearance that will result in a long lasting hot mix asphalt pavement.

Agencies receiving recognition for this 1^st place award include the Iowa Department of Transportation District 2 Office in Mason City and the Resident Construction Engineering Office in New Hampton.

The APAI awards its contractor members with awards in many areas, including smoothness and quality management.

The Osage Municipal Airport Project has been recognized by APAI as the smoothest resurfaced airport in the state for 2004. The project was judged by a California Profilograph which determined the runway to be the smoothest airport runway resurfacing project constructed in the state of Iowa this year.

Participating in the judging of the project entries, as well as the ceremony itself, was

the Iowa Department of Transportation. Yaggy Colby and Associates of Mason City designed the project for the City of Osage, who also received recognition for this 1^st place award.

The Interstate 35 Resurfacing Project in Cerro Gordo and Franklin Counties has been recognized by the APAI as the “Best-of-the-Best” by its contractor peers and the Iowa Department of Transportation. The resurfacing project constructed in the fall of 2003 and completed in the summer of 2004, resulted in one of the smoothest interstate routes in Iowa. Along with smoothness, the road exhibits other qualities such as proper density, excellent quality control, and physical appearance that will result in a long lasting hot mix asphalt pavement.

Agencies receiving recognition for this 1^st place winning project was the Iowa Department of Transportation District 2 office in Mason City and the Resident Construction Engineering Office in Britt.

Mason City, IA—January 5, 2004 -- Heartland Asphalt, Inc. of Mason City was presented with four awards at the 49^th annual Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa Convention December 2^nd at the West Des Moines Marriott. The APAI awards its contractor members with awards in many areas, including smoothness and quality management.

Each year the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Transportation pay special tribute to those involved in producing smooth, high quality asphalt pavements.

Heartland Asphalt was awarded two separate “Smoothness Awards”. the first being in the “Municipal Street Resurfacing Category” on Highway 122 in Mason City. This project was judged by a California Profilograph and was determined to be the smoothest municipal resurfacing project constructed in Iowa this year. The second award was in the “Airport Runway Resurfacing Category” The Osage Municipal Airport project in Osage, IA was constructed in 2004. This project was also judged by the California Profilograph and was determined to be the smoothest airport runway project constructed in Iowa.

Awards are judged on surface appearance, degree of difficulty and other criteria.

Both projects were designed and inspected by Yaggy Colby and Associates of Mason City, Iowa.

Heartland Asphalt was also awarded two “Quality Management Asphalt Awards”. These winning pavements are considered the “Best-of-the-Best”, an indication that they are not only smooth but exhibit other characteristics such as proper density, excellent quality control and physical appearance that produce long-lasting hot mix asphalt pavements. One of the two, 1^st place award winning projects was in the “Primary Resurfacing Category”. Old U.S. Highway 218 in Chickasaw County North of Nashua, resulted in one of the smoothest primary routes in Iowa. The second award that won 1^st place was in the “Interstate Resurfacing Category”. The Interstate 35 resurfacing project in Franklin and Cerro Gordo counties south of Clear Lake was constructed in 2003 and 2004 and resulted in one of the smoothest interstate routes in Iowa.

Agencies involved in the work for both projects included Iowa Department of Transportation District 2 office in Mason City. The Resident Construction Engineering office in New Hampton for the US Highway 218 project and the Resident Construction Engineering office in Britt for the Interstate 35 resurfacing project.

Mason City, IA—February 8, 2004 -- Heartland Asphalt, Inc. of Mason City was awarded the Associated General Contractors of Iowa Bravo Award for the 4^th year in a row and is only 1 of two companies to win it every year since its inception in 2000. Bravo Awards are awarded to member contractors that exhibit community spirit and corporate responsibility.

To focus the public’s attention on these gestures of community spirit, the AGC of Iowa has an annual reception recognition program that shines the industry spotlight on these firms’ voluntary contributions to our state and to our society. To earn a Bravo Award is to receive the AGC’s highest corporate recognition and set these company’s above the rest.

Among the generous gifts the Heartland Asphalt provided in 2004 was an in-kind donation of time, equipment and materials to install a drainage system, excavation to final grade, fine grading football field, and the building of a new running track at the Newman Catholic School in Mason City. As a result, the Newman Football team will host its first “home game” on their new field in August of 2005.

Heartland Asphalt, Inc. in 2004 also donated to local area schools for numerous events such as “after prom”, vocal and drama events, and youth sports teams. Donations were also given to Community Development and events including city festivals, park development, and emergency/fire stations. Other charitable organizations like the Boy and Girl Scouts, United Way of North Iowa, the Christmas Cheer fund and others also benefited from donations .

Heartland Asphalt Receives 2003 “Bravo” Award for Community Contributions

Mason City, IA -- February 10, 2004 -- Heartland Asphalt, Inc. of Mason City has been awarded a 2003 “Bravo” award from the Associated General Contractors of Iowa for its significant contributions to the North Iowa area. The highest award the AGC of Iowa bestows was presented at the 2004 AGC of Iowa Annual Convention January 16, 2004 in Des Moines.

Heartland Asphalt donated time, money, and materials to the Mason City Municipal Pool Project that allowed the Mason City Park Board to expand the pool project, increasing the size of the pool and parking lot, as well as adding equipment to increase the enjoyment of the facility.

At the new Newman Catholic elementary school, Heartland Asphalt’s in-kind donation allowed the new parking area to be paved, excavation to final grade of the playground area, and the leveling of the football practice area.

Heartland Asphalt believes in community spirit and corporate responsibility and this is evidenced by continuing support of local schools through events such as after prom, vocal and drama events, and support of youth sports teams. Heartland Asphalt also contributed to annual city festivals, park development, and emergency and fire stations. Charitable organizations, such as Boy and Girl Scouts and the United Way of North Iowa have also benefited from in-kind and monetary donations.
