Heartland Asphalt, Inc. Wins Three

National Awards For Quality In Asphalt Paving

Mason City, IA—March 8, 2006 –The National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA) announced that Heartland Asphalt, Inc. of Mason City, Iowa, has won a 2005 Quality in Construction Award for Excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement.  The company received its award at a special ceremony at the association’s 51st Annual Convention, “Ride the Pavement,” in Hollywood, Florida.

The Quality in Construction Awards recognize hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements of excellence.  “NAPA selects the recipients of its paving awards using a known set of standards that have been shown to give a good result, “ commented Richard F. Moore, Jr. 2005 Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors.  “The award demonstrates the high quality of work that the HMA industry is achieving.”

The company won an award for the rehabilitation of Runway 17-35 at Mason City Municipal Airport.  Working on a very tight time schedule, Heartland Asphalt, Inc. completely reconstructed the southern 700 feet of the main runway where it intersected with another runway and then milled and overlaid the remainder of the main runway.  The company met the Federal Aviation Administration’s demanding specifications and produced a smooth runway that drew favorable comments from pilots, passengers and airport managers.

Heartland Asphalt, Inc. won an award for work done on County Road B-20 in Cerro Gordo County.  B-20, a major route between the Interstate 35 and several manufacturing and industrial facilities, required widening and the installation of turn lanes at major intersections.  The company spot milled and crack and seated the badly deteriorated concrete pavement and overlaid it with 8 inches of HMA placed in four lifts.  The public has commented favorably on the smoothness of the new road.

The final award won by Heartland Asphalt, Inc. was for its work on 240th Street, south of Mason City, in Cerro Gordo County.  It paved and widened the existing gravel road, first stabilizing the roadbed with rock to provide a stable sub-base.  Railroad tracks that cut through the middle of the road had to be widened to provide access to a new ethanol plant.  The company used HMA mixes with special binders so that the road could handle  a large volume of truck traffic.  Heartland kept in constant communication with property owners, the ethanol plant and the railroad to ensure that the project ran as smoothly as possible.
